What Does Love Have to Do With It? Everything!
    Author: Julianna Dawson
    Date: 01/02/2016

It’s 5 am and as I arise and give thanks, it occurred to me that my grandmother used to wake up at “5:00 o’clock”. That’s how we used to say it on the island. Barbados. “5:00 o’clock”.

Back then I couldn’t fathom why this woman would wake up “so early” and be so happy doing it. She’d make us tea every morning. Yip, tea, and the way our family made tea in those days was Olvaltine or preferably Milo, brown cane sugar, condensed milk in the can–which I now believe may have been a relic from when we didn’t have a refrigerator, but the habit stuck with us like many others, and whenever I was making it I’d drink some of the syrupy sweet liquid before adding the water. Tea. Yeah, one day when I was older I learned that the rest of the world called that chocolate milk and what my grandmother used to make a separate pot of for herself and the adults and called “green tea” was actually tea.

Anyway, that was a huge tangent wasn’t it? What I intended to share with you this morning is that I now find myself waking up “so early” and being so happy doing it. (I should mention that the word so is being used like the word “very”.) Making my kids warm milk. Trying desperately to wean them off and onto water followed by fruit first. I’m about to sort the clothes and do laundry–and I’m happy about it. That’s the strangest thing ever as I observe myself these days finding deep pleasure in doing things I once gave very little thought to. I experience these deep feelings of joy while doing all sorts of things. Writing a proposal for a client at work, planning something for my family. And all I can think is that I’ve finally learned how the simple act of infusing love into my ations deepens that feeling of joy in a way I didn’t understand before. That’s what I wanted to share with you this morning. That feeling of joy. A feeling I want you for you as well.

    Have a fabulous day!

Dominic just woke up. Gotta go. Love yah!

A Performance Celebration of Love and Valentine’s Day
    Author: Julianna Dawson
    Date: 02/20/2014

On Sunday, February 16th, 2014 I was honored to attend Music Alive! Many Loves and Kisses at The PAC House Theater in the Parish House at Trinity St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at 311 Huguenot Street in New Rochelle, New York where Two-tti Flutti and The Bassoon (Andrew Bolotowsky and Pamela Sklar on the flutes and Donald Venezia on the bassoon); along with featured artist Robert Puleo, Alma Hamilton, Michael Hull, Kathryn Hall, Garry Novikoff, Enid Blount Press performed in a celebration of Love and Valentine’s Day.

The program included a premiere of Trinity–3 of my poems, Lover’s Walk, Love Unexpected and Time; set to music and performed by Robert Puleo, accompanied by Two-tti Flutti and The Bassoon.

You may have read or may even have heard me read or recite these poems, but set to this style of music it is an entirely different and welcome experience. It was truly a gift to sit in the audience with my family and twin babies welcomed by everyone, interruptions and all, and listen to these artists take on my poems.

Watch the videos below and leave a comment if you like:

The audience loved the way Robert sung the end of this one so much they forgot that they were asked to save the applause until the end of the 3rd poem and started to clap, then they remembered.

Unfortunately my phone ran out of space before the last performance ended, but you get the idea. It was a wonderful evening.

That Novel Will Never Be Perfect
    Author: Julianna Dawson
    Date: 02/03/2014

I’d like to share some helpful insight from this week’s Rave Reviews Book Club second “Spotlight” Author, Katie Hayoz.

    From Katie Hayoz

I’m not a perfectionist.  Little mistakes don’t bother me.  But when it comes to my writing, I take pride in what I do and I want what I put out there to be not just decent, but good.  I rewrote Untethered at least eighteen times.  Literally.  And I’m talking full-on, rip-it-up and make do with the shreds kind of rewriting, not moving sentences around. What started as a five-page story ended up (20 years later) to be a 340 page novel.  That novel went through so many critiquing sessions and beta readers that I was sure it would be perfection by the time it was published.

    Ha.  Not quite.

Writing is art, and like all art there is a point where the person creating the work just has to stop. She just has to tell herself that particular piece is the best she can make it right then.  That’s the sticker: right then.  Because the truth is that you can always go back and make it better.  There will always be holes you missed or mistakes you made or words that paint a clearer picture.  But if you keep going back and going back and going back you never move on.  Never get on to the next book; the one that first one prepared you for.

My dad paints watercolor. I can’t tell you the number of times he’s looked at a picture of his, already framed and on the wall, and said, “Why did I think this was finished? This whole section could use reworking.”  My mom rolls her eyes.  I understand.  I totally do.

But there was a point when I just had to quit trying to make Untethered perfect.   A point where my writing group and my family and friends said, “Stop already!”  So I did.  I’m proud of this novel — the characters, the world, the writing itself.  However, that didn’t keep me from face-palming myself after its publication.  There were things that I see now that I couldn’t see then.  It kills me.  And yet…

And yet I could go in, change it all and six months from now I’d be face-palming myself again.  So, I’ve left it as is.  I’ve moved onto another novel.  It’s finished; sort of.  I’ve done three drafts – three pick away the fleshy parts and gnaw on the bone drafts.  I’ll rewrite it one more time. Then I’ll need to tell myself, “Stop already!  That novel will never be perfect.”

But I’m hoping it will be damn good.

*Katie Hayoz was born in Racine, WI, USA but ended up in Geneva, Switzerland, where she lives with her husband, two daughters, and two fuzzy cats. She devours YA novels like she does popcorn and black licorice: quickly and in large quantities.

Untetheredis a paranormal coming of age novel that follows 16-year-old Sylvie on a unique and slightly sinister journey of self-acceptance. Sylvie has an ability to leave her physical body and astral project. While it could be akin to a superpower, she sees it as a curse.  That is, until the day she decides to play with its dark side. Sylvie then sets an evil plan in motion that she believes will change her life for the better.  But she does not count on it spiraling out of control.

    For My Child’s Life
    Author: Julianna Dawson
    Date: 01/25/2014

    For my child’s life
    I would beg
    I would not borrow
    I would not steal
I would put myself on display
I would stand naked in front of the world
    To be laughed at
    To be made of
    A joke
I would act on every idea I’ve ever had in hope that one works
    I would risk my job
    My life savings gone
I would be glad to be fired to release the 401k funds
I would start my life over from scratch
With nothing to my name but my name
    And begin anew
Poor, destitute, but alive inside, not broken
Because if I don’t and my child died
I would die myself a slow death each and every day I would live
    After his passing

I wrote this poem almost a year and a half ago when someone very dear to me was telling me about their need to save their child’s life. That night I went to bed tossing and turning. I awoke in the middle of the night thinking of my own newborn son and this short poem is what came pouring out as the tears flowed and I decided to help. Some of you mothers out there may identify with these feelings. In fact, now that I look back at this poem today I’m convinced that I would do even more than I thought back then as a new mother.

    1. I love your poem. Your love for your child is so evident in this very eloquent poem. As John 15:13 says: “There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” If every parent loved their children like you express here, our world would be a much better place. Thank you for sharing.

    Mother Power
    Author: Julianna Dawson

    We need some Mother Power

To make our dreams come true

The kind of power that moves mountains

    Builds bridges

Makes a way where there is none

    Mother Power

    Revealing all life’s possibilities

For all the world to see

Mother Power in you and me

When someone says it can’t be done

When God feels we’re acting small

    He calls on Mother Power

To save us one and all

    Mother Power
